Separate the claims
A claim that a container can enter a recycling stream addresses one aspect of its end of life. A claim about PFAS concerns the substances present and the routes by which they may be released. Neither statement, by itself, supplies the answer to the other.
Use the Inhance case carefully
EPA’s container work examines PFAS formation and migration. It is not a complete assessment of every recycling pathway for every treated plastic. Reporting should avoid inventing a finding about a specific recycler or facility when the cited study does not address that question.
What a fuller assessment would need
An evaluation could examine collection, sorting, material processing and the fate of relevant chemicals. The evidence should identify the actual pathway and operating conditions. A sustainability label is most useful when its scope is explicit, allowing readers to see which environmental question it answers and which remains open.
